What is Reductil?

There are a lot of diet pills out these days, but few actually provide the results that they claim they can produce. Reductil was a product that tried to brake away from this mold. Mainly for people who are either overweight and clinically obese, this product worked by not only making the user feel full sooner, but also it helps keep the metabolism from slowing.

Is this product really as great as it claims to be though? Even if it does do what it claims, are the results universal, or is it just some people who will experience weight loss? We decided to look into this diet pill, and try to separate what is truth from what is just advertising fiction.

 Who makes it?

Reductil was manufactured originally by a company called Knoll Pharmacueticals, but later it was continued by another company named Abbott Labratories. Founded in 1888, Abbott has been known for producing a wide range of medically related products, ranging from diet pills to treatments for arthritis to HIV testing. Reductil was found to be unsafe for human consumption and is no longer available on the market.

How (and) does it work?

Reductil worked by stimulating neurotransmitters in the brain that are responsible for effecting mood. The neurotransmitters that are effected are serotonin and noradrenaline. When these two are altered, the resulting effect is that the user feels satisfied, happy and not wanting to eat more as they have been accustomed to do.

Despite some users reporting positive results from use of this product, these results were not typical. Some users reported no change in weight at all.

What’s inside of it and are there side effects?

While containing other ingredients, the key ingredient in Reductil was sibutramine hydrochoride monohydrate. While effective for some, this ingredient was found to possibly give heart attack and stroke to some of it’s users. It is because of this that Reductil as a whole was banned in various countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, China and the Philippines to name a few. Ingredients:

• Sibutramine hydrochloride monohydrate: Related to amphetamines, this ingredient effects neurotransmitters in the brain that give the user a sense of fullness.
• Lactose: Found in milk, this ingredient is known to be a healthy sugar that is low in calories.
• Magnesium stearate: A salt that is not soluble in water, this ingredient is used for it’s lubricating properties that are useful in tablets.
• Microcrystalline cellulose: Commonly used in food production and vitamin supplements for it’s emulsifying, fat substituting and bulk agent properties.
• Colloidal silicon dioxide: Stated to be safe for human consumption by the FDA, this ingredient is used for it’s anti-caking, disintegrate and absorbent properties.

Adverse effects from use of this product may include the following:

Insomnia, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, sweating, lightheadednes, nausea dry mouth, hot flashes, paraesthesia, headache, impotence, depression, hypertension, palpitations, tachycardia, seizures kidney disorders, thrombocytopenia, anxiety, heart attack and stroke.

What’s good about it?

Unlike other diet pills that can have you taking them multiple times a day, Reductil was only needed to be taken once a day.

What’s bad about it?

Unlike other diet pills, Reductil was not recommended for use with a lot of different people. Some examples of who should not use this product are: women who are pregnant or breast feeding, people with a history of eating disorders, people with a history of drug and/or alcohol abuse, people over the age of 65, people under the age of 16; the list goes on and on. And that’s not even mentioning that this product is just for obese people! Clearly this is not a general slimming pill.

In 2024 Reductil was banned in the United Kingdom because it was found to cause heart attack and stroke in some of it’s users. Other countries that have banned this product include the United States, Canada, China, the Philippines, Hong Kong, the European Union, Mexico, New Zealand, Thailand and India. You shouldn’t have to risk these adverse effects to be healthier. Clearly governments around the world though so as well.

Lastly for a packet of 30 capsules, the cost was $85, which is a really high in the diet pill world. And if you didn’t like the product, you should have considered that sooner, because there was no money back guarantee.

When governments ban products, there’s always a good reason behind it. In this product’s case, it’s that heart attack and stroke shouldn’t have to be possible side effects that people should have to worry about.

Today Reductil can no longer be found on the market. Deemed unsafe by governments around the world, this product can only be found in internet searches that talk about what this product once was. While side effects are something that always have to be considered when taking diet pills, heart attack and stroke shouldn’t be included in this list. Better diet pills won’t cause these symptoms. If there’s anything to take away from this product, it’s what a diet pill shouldn’t be.
