Lorcaserin Review – Is it Good for Weight Loss?

What is Lorcaserin?

Boasting it’s status as an FDA approved dietary supplement, lorcaserin (known by it’s brand name Belviq) claims that it can not only help it’s users with weight loss, but also help with other health risk factors, such as high blood pressure, cholesterol and sugar levels.

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a product out there that was honest in regards to it’s claims? Is lorcaserin the product that you have been looking for to help you with your weight loss endeavors, or should you look elsewhere? We went ahead to look into this to help you decide where you want your hard earned money being spent.

 Who makes it?

Lorcaserin is manufactured by the San Diego, California based Arena Pharmaceuticals. As of September 2014, Arena Pharmaceuticals has other products in the pipeline that are used to help treat a variety of maladies. Lorcaserin needs to be prescribed by a doctor and can be purchased online.

 How (and) does it work?

Lorcaserin is an anorectic, meaning that it is used to help suppress appetite. Lorcaserin claims that it works by targeting the serotonin receptors in the brain, which in turn help you not feel hungry as often. Lorcaserin is to be taken twice daily in 10mg tablets, each time with a meal.

Even though what it claims seem amazing, users have reported that without diet and exercise the results were not typical.

What’s inside of it and are there side effects?

Lorcaserin is made of a formation of (1R)-8-chloro-1-methyl-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-3-benzazepine. Some people may feel uncomfortable ingesting synthetically made diet pills, so this product may not be for them. Mild side effects: Back pain, headache, dizziness, nausea, dry mouth and constipation.

Serious side effects: low blood sugar levels, rigid muscles, body ache, agitation, rapid heart rate, hallucinations, unusual or suicidal thoughts and erections that may last longer than 4 hours.

 What’s good about it?

Lorcaserin is FDA approved, unlike many other products that have disclaimers, explaining that their claims have not been evaluated by the FDA.

 What’s bad about it?

PillsAlthough it is meant for long term use, there are risks with Lorcaserin, as it may be habit forming. this is something to consider, especially if you have a history of alcohol and substance abuse. Using lorcaserin might end up becoming a replacement. Because lorcaserin works by stimulating the serotonin receptors, it works similarly to drugs and alcohol that also effect dopamine levels. It’s when the serotonin receptors are not stimulated as they usually are when taking a substance, that withdrawal symptoms can start to occur.

Also since it is such a new drug, despite the previously mentioned side effects, not much is known about how the drug will react to people on a wider scale. At first things may seem fine with a diet pill, but only time will tell if there are any other adverse effects that haven’t been taken into consideration. And it’s not like the FDA was always ready to give the go ahead with lorcaserin, as in 2010 and 2012 lorcaserin was denied approval, during the former by the FDA and in the latter by a federal advisory committee.

That’s not to mention Lorcaserin use has been linked to a higher risk in cancer. That sentence in and of itself is a reason enough to question if you really want to be ingesting this product. Sure you want to lose some weight, but possibly getting cancer in the process? Is it really worth it?

 Wrap Up

While being FDA approved there are potential health risks with this product. That’s not to mention that without diet and exercise, lorcaserin by itself may only provide limited results, if any at all.

 Bottom Line:

If you are looking to lose a few pounds, the basics that you need to keep on lock are having a balanced, low calorie diet as well as regular exercise. Lorcaserin does mention that it is part of a complete package, as the product alone will not help you get the results you want. However when taking into consideration how new this product is, and that it has been linked to an increased risk of cancer, you need to take what the company says with a grain of salt and really consider if lorcaserin is right for you. If you decide it is not, don’t worry, as there are plenty of other diet pills on the market that may be better for you. Possibly cheaper as well. There’s a whole market of dietary supplements out there that can help you get to your weight loss goals. All it takes is opening up a new web browser and seeing what’s out there for yourself.

We recommend trying other diet pills that may be better and more effective for you.
